Institute for Sustainable and Renewable Resources
The Institute for Sustainable and Renewable Resources (ISRR) is a major research division within Danville’s Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (a joint venture among Virginia Tech, Averett University, and Danville Community College). Created, in part, to help the Southern Virginia region transition its agricultural focus from tobacco to alternative crops, the ISRR combines new technologies in plant tissue culture, molecular biology and breeding, genomics, and information technology to facilitate the development and propagation of novel ornamental, crop, and forestry plant varieties. ISRR Director, Dr. Barry Flinn, serves as host of this intriguing look at how science combines with practical application in a quickly expanding academic field.
